Back Down

© 2025
Written in 2015 when I was highly disillusioned with life on Earth.

And back down I fell
deep into the familiar blaze of hell,
broken bride of the lizard lords
who slither and slide over stolen swords,
whilst all the while the Souls weep and bleed
shackled in an alien creed
My heart
this pain!
and the terror stalking the nights again,
clutching hands,
ice cold on my back,
pulling me down
into the whispering black
Sanity is not a line
you’re not one day crazy and the next day fine
it’s a mist
a maze
twisting in,
weaving out
until you’re holding the gaze
of the stranger in the mirror,
utterly shell-shocked
having just crossed no man’s land,
only to find you’re fighting both sides of the war
your finger on the trigger
and cold steel at your temple
Around you the busy ants scuttle
In little tin boxes along snaking black lines,
minds ticking over
keeping busy,
so as not to see or feel,
drugging the pain,
blotting out the horror of the real

And across once teeming-with-life lands
the bones of the gentle giants slowly sink
beneath the restless, greedy sands
their dignity and stolen lives mourned only by the lonely wind
Broken lions wait in cages to die
while the Earth screams out and the tender ask why,
but most of the ants just pass blindly by
not even hearing the animals’ cries

Rivers of slime pour poisons into dead seas
the blood of the slaughtered mingles with deliberate disease
and the Life and Joy choke with rubbish and greed
Children starve whilst the greedy grow bolder
people sleeping in the streets, icy cold,
whilst lonely billionaires sit in their empty castles
counting their towers of fake gold
and polishing their Badges of Belonging to a broken Society
And then we get called crazy for thinking this is madness?
Called terrorists for trying to end the sadness?

Oh - the lizard lords!
who slither and slide over stolen swords,
whilst all the while the Souls weep and bleed
shackled in an alien creed.
